The health ministry says that it will fine National Defense University NT$1 million (US$32,000) for expelling an HIV-positive student.
The ministry announced Saturday that Health Minister Lin Tzou-yien has approved the fine and that the Centers for Disease Control may issue the fine as soon as Monday.
The defense ministry says said it will contest the fine. According to defense ministry officials, the student was expelled because of misconduct, not because of discrimination. The student had reportedly been given two demerits and two warnings in 2012.
After the case reached public attention earlier in the month, Health Minister Lin Tzou-yien called for a change in perceptions of HIV-AIDS patients.
