Taiwan should see Vatican dialogue with China in positive light: Official

Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung says Taiwan should see dialogue between the Vatican and China as a positive development.

Wu’s was speaking Sunday, one day after Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said that the Vatican hopes to improve ties with Beijing.

Wu said that relations between Taiwan and the Vatican are stable because the two nations share common values like religious freedom, democracy, and human rights. He said that China’s conversation with the Vatican on these subjects could bring positive outcomes.

Wu also said that the Vatican’s dialogue with China doesn’t affect its ties with Taiwan, and that Vice President Chen Chien-jen’s scheduled visit to the Vatican will go ahead as scheduled.
