A new article by Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung says that Chinese attempts to keep Taiwan off the international stage will only damage China's image.
Wu co-wrote the article with Professor Chen Mu-min of National Chung Hsing University. Both have led discussions this week in a conference held to commemorate 20 years of democracy in Taiwan.
In the article, Wu said that China’s recent moves to block Taiwan from participating in international events will anger the Taiwanese public. He said that Beijing needs to adopt a more collaborative attitude.
Earlier in the year, there was speculation in Taiwan's media that Taiwan might not be invited to participate in this year's World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting. Many believe the invitation's last-minute delivery was meant to pressure President Tsai Ing-wen to acknowledge the 1992 consensus. The 1992 Consensus is a tacit agreement between Taiwan and China under which both recognized that they belong to one China, but each reserved the right to interpret what “one China” means. Tsai has not acknowledged the consensus since taking office in May.
