Premier Lin Chuan has vowed to build a better environment for Taiwanese athletes so as to prepare them for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Lin was speaking Monday during a luncheon for the Taiwanese team which competed at the Rio Olympics.
Taiwan won one gold and two bronzes this year, which is short of the target of three golds, two silvers and one bronze.
Lin admitted that Taiwan has not done a very good job of training its athletes. He said more professional training and a better system are needed to prepare for the next Olympics.
“Taiwan has many distinguished, world-class athletes, but we know that we cannot leave them to their own resources and fail to give them support, so we will review and improve the current system," said Lin.
"We will also actively learn from the experiences of athletic development in other advanced countries, he said. "[We] hope to build a suitable and competitive environment that meets our needs.”
