Taiwan has begun talking with Japan about a time for talks on maritime issues. That’s the word from the Secretary-General of the Association of East Asian Relations, Tsai Ming-yaw at a press conference on Tuesday. The association is the semi-official body in charge of Taiwan-Japan exchanges. The date is not set yet.
The first talks were originally scheduled for July, but were postponed due to inadequate preparation. Tsai said his office was prepared to discuss fishery cooperation and emergency rescue work at sea but not environmental protection or scientific investigation.
Meanwhile, Tsai said there has been no progress in Japan’s offering a formal apology to Taiwan’s former comfort women. Tsai was referring to the Taiwanese women who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II.
