On this day in 1963, Hualien, an eastern Taiwan city facing the Pacific, was opened as an international port.

On this day in 1982, Kenting National Park, the first of its kind in the Republic of China, was inaugurated.

On this day in 1999, The Republic of China became the first country in the world to implement a nationwide law requiring compulsory registration of dogs as part of its efforts to improve animal management and protection.
