Nuclear power plants will be decommissioned as scheduled: Premier

Premier Lin Chuan says Taiwan’s First and Second Nuclear Power Plants will be decommissioned as scheduled. Lin was speaking Friday during a meeting with residents of Taiwan’s northern coast where the two power plants are located.

According to the Atomic Energy Council, the No. 1 reactor of the First Nuclear Power Plant will be decommissioned at the end of 2018 and the No. 2 reactor in 2019. The two reactors of the Second Nuclear Power Plant will be decommissioned in the following years.

Lin said the government will not extend the service life of the two reactors and will do its best to ensure that there is no shortage of electricity by then.

The premier said the government has plenty of ways to maintain the balance between energy supply and demand, and that safety is the number one priority.

Lin said the government is working hard to push for the transformation of power grids to cope with the challenges of the next two years.
