A coalition of public sector employees has held a protest in Taipei. The protestors took to the streets Saturday against the defamation they say they have faced as the government works to reform Taiwan’s pension system.
Organizers say that military personnel, public servants, and public school teachers have all been unfairly blamed for the pension system’s financial problems. The organizers said they hope that 100,000 public sector employees would join the protest.
Protestors say that they support efforts to fix the pension system. But they are opposed to methods that they say resemble those used during China’s Cultural Revolution.
On Saturday afternoon, groups of protestors marched through Taipei along four separate routes before converging near the Presidential Office Building.
