The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says the door of communication is still open with China. That’s according to a statement released Sunday by the top China policy-making body.
The statement comes on the heels of a meeting between US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Hangzhou ahead of the G20 Summit. It was reported that Xi asked Obama to stick to Washington’s one China policy and the three joint communiqués between the two sides. The Chinese leader also said China strongly opposes any form of Taiwan independence.
The MAC said that ever since President Tsai Ing-wen took office in mid-May, the government has worked to maintain cross-strait peace and stability. The council said it has left the door of communication open while respecting historical facts and the existing political conditions. The MAC said Taiwan has demonstrated its utmost sincerity and determination to build a consistent, predictable and sustainable relationship with China.
The MAC said the government’s China policy has not only won public support, it has also met the interests and expectations of both sides as well as other countries in the region.
