Vice President Chen Chien-jen says relations between Taiwan and the Vatican remain stable. Chen was speaking at the Taoyuan International Airport early Friday morning, where he had just arrived after a trip to the Vatican.
The Vatican is the only European country that maintains formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The vice president led a delegation to visit the Vatican to attend the canonization ceremony for Mother Teresa.
He said that 150,000 people attended the Mass for the Catholic nun who was revered for helping the poor in India and promoting world peace.
Chen said the government will continue promoting religious freedom and world peace together with the Vatican and other countries on the basis of universal values such as peace, freedom, equality and compassion.
