The Central Weather Bureau says that Tropical Storm Meranti is expected to develop into a moderate typhoon on Sunday afternoon.
The storm is still in the Pacific to the southeast of Taiwan. As of Sunday afternoon, it was 1,700 km away from Taiwan’s southernmost point, approaching at a speed of 25km per hour.
If the storm continues on its current path, it will hit Taiwan on Wednesday and affect weather over the four-day Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend, which begins on Thursday. However, the Central Weather Bureau says that if a high pressure system over the Pacific continues to hold, the storm could change course southward.
