Hollywood Director Ang Lee had words of congratulations for Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan on Sunday. That’s for the recently announced honorary Oscar that the Board of Governors will present to Chan in November.
Ang’s comments came shortly after he himself received an award – the International Honour of Excellence -- at the annual International Broadcasting Convention (IBC).
The multiple Oscar-winning Taiwanese-American filmmaker said the decision to honor Jackie Chan is a sign that the academy has become more accepting of Asian artists.
Lee said the Oscars have traditionally had an American perspective. But he said that the awards need to keep up with a rapidly changing world. Lee said that as a fellow Asian artist he is proud of Jackie Chan, and that he is glad to see the Academy Awards changing for the better.
