President Tsai Ing-wen has ordered the defense ministry to completely upgrade combat gear for Taiwan’s troops and speed up the remodeling of dilapidated barracks. Her call came Monday during an inspection tour of two brigades in northern Taiwan.
Tsai said the two tasks must be completed within three years.
“Today the display of new combat gear by the production center of the Armaments Bureau is aimed at emphasizing the importance of military uniforms. I hope our troops will be able to wear quality uniforms in the future and that they can feel proud and honored to do so," said Tsai, "Second, I’m requesting the defense ministry speed up a remodeling plan for dilapidated barracks. During my [recent] barracks inspections, I have paid particular attention to the living environment of [our soldiers]. I must say that some barracks for low-ranking soldiers are too old and that renovations must be quickly completed.”
Tsai said the government will do its best to solve the two issues.
She promised to give the troops her full support, saying that inspections are conducted to gain a first-hand understanding of the problems they face.
