Taiwanese businesspeople returning home to invest

Taiwanese businessmen are returning to Taiwan to invest. That’s the word from economic officials at a forum for Taiwanese investors on Tuesday.

Taiwan has already reached 89% of its goal for the year for investments from Taiwanese nationals returning from abroad. These businesspersons have already invested NT$47.7 billion (US$1.5 billion). The economics ministry said 81% of the investments are in manufacturing while the remainder are mostly in the service sector.

Economics ministry official Lien Yu-pin says a change in business environments abroad is one reason for the change. China, for example, is changing the structure of its economy. Lien also explained why investing in Taiwan is becoming more attractive.

Lien said, "With new emerging industries in Taiwan, companies can plan on having their design, research, high-end production and headquarters in Taiwan. The Taiwanese businesspersons that used to do cross-strait manufacturing and global marketing are planning to put their high value production in Taiwan. This will lead to more opportunities in emerging sectors."

Lien said that many overseas Taiwanese investors have expressed a desire to invest in Taiwan but they have difficulty finding land to do so. Over 250 people at the forum have expressed an interest in coming back to Taiwan to do business.
