Super Typhoon Meranti, the strongest storm of the year, has passed over Taiwan, with the Central Weather Bureau giving the all-clear at 11:30 on Thursday morning.

But the bureau said Tropical Storm Malakas has strengthened into a typhoon and may come closest to Taiwan on Saturday. Though not as powerful as Meranti, the storm has sustained winds of 126 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 162 kilometers per hour.

The weather bureau said a sea warning for Malakas may be issued late Thursday or on Friday. It is expected to affect eastern and northern Taiwan before turning north toward Japan, the bureau said.
