The Global Taiwan Institute, a new think tank, has opened its doors in Washington DC.
The think tank will offer analysis on US-Taiwan-China relations, issue a regular publication, organize lectures, and hold an annual conference for academics and officials.
An opening ceremony was held on Wednesday, with members of Congress and Taiwan’s representative to the US in attendance. Institute director Robert Lai said the think tank’s most important job will be to pass on the vision of strong Taiwan-US ties to the next generation.
Taiwan’s representative to the US, Stanley Kao, wished the think tank success in raising Taiwan’s visibility in Washington and building stronger ties with the US. Meanwhile, Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a strong backer of Taiwan, said Congress continues to support Taiwanese participation in international organizations. Ros-Lehtinen also said that the US must raise its commitment to Taiwan’s overall security.
