A land warning was issued on Friday for Typhoon Malakas, the second typhoon to affect Taiwan this week. Malakas comes hard on the heels of Super Typhoon Meranti, the strongest storm of the year so far, which passed across southern Taiwan on Wednesday.
Malakas is not expected to make landfall but rather to sweep northward up Taiwan’s east coast. This may however bring strong rain and winds to the eastern and northern parts of the island.
The Central Weather Bureau has urged residents of Taitung and Hualien on the east coast as well as those north of central Taiwan to take precautions against storm damage.
Earlier this week, Typhoon Meranti caused flooding and power outages as it swept across the south of Taiwan. One person was killed and tens of others were injured in the storm.
