Taiwan’s leading smartphone maker HTC has attracted a good deal of attention, including from a major rival, with the latest showcase of its virtual reality (VR) technology.
VR is the latest in mobile phone technology that allows users to experience a virtual, 360-degree world from the phone’s screen. HTC has been a leader in the field with the release of the Vive, one of the first dedicated VR videogame kits.
The company launched 20 new games to support Vive on Friday at the Tokyo Game Show, bringing long lines to the HTC booth. Among those eager to experience it was Palmer Lucky, CEO of Oculus, HTC’s chief rival in VR gaming.
Industry experts expect VR to explode onto the market and become a main factor in the entertainment and technology industry in the next few years.
