A senior cross-strait official claims both Taiwan and China have exercised self-restraint after President Tsai Ing-wen took office on May 20th.
Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) deputy head Lin Cheng-yi made the statement in an interview in Washington DC on Thursday. The MAC is Taiwan’s top agency in charge of China policy.
Lin is making a visit to Washington DC, where he gave a speech on cross-strait ties at the Brookings Institution. In the interview, Lin said he hopes that China is able to appreciate President Tsai’s friendly gestures on which the much-needed mutual trust is based.
Relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have chilled since Tsai took office, with Beijing appearing to boycott the new administration. President Tsai has declined to affirm the so-called 1992 Consensus on “one China” that formed the basis of cross-strait dialogue under the previous government in Taipei.
