Cabinet outlines revamped energy policy
Promoting green energy

The Cabinet has outlined its roadmap to reforming the energy sector and taking Taiwan’s nuclear power plants offline by 2025.

The Cabinet says it has already begun rolling out policies designed to increase efficiency and encourage green energy while ensuring a stable power supply.

Short term strategies for keeping Taiwan’s power grid stable include replacing old generators with new, more efficient models. The government will also work to ease pressure on the grid with policies that include lowering prices during off-peak hours.

In the longer term, the government plans to develop renewable energy sources so that they account for 20% of Taiwan’s power by 2025. Other long term strategies include promoting the use of natural gas.

The government also plans to open up the power market to private companies, allowing them to generate and supply electricity.
