Taiwan tug-of-war team returns, triumphant

A Taiwanese tug-of-war team has returned to Taiwan after winning six golds in the women’s competition at the 2016 International Tug-of War Championship in Sweden.

One of the gold medals – in the women’s under 23 years of age 500 kg category -- is the fourth straight win for the team.

The team was made up of students from National Taiwan Normal University and Taipei Jingmei Girls High School.

At a press conference held on Monday, one of the team members, Huang Yi-jing, spoke about the stamina of her teammates.

“A lot of the people on our team felt that the opposing teams were probably watching our videos because their movements and their [tactics] were closing in on us. As a result, we also kept adjusting our [strategies] because we were also afraid of them," said Huang, "But the coach told us that we had practiced far more than any of the other teams, and our physical strength was understandably greater. So as long as we could hang in there a second or a few minutes more, we could win.”

The Taiwan team has its sights set next on the World Games, 2017 in Poland and the International Tug-of War Championship in South Africa in 2018.
