DPP should continue to carry the nation forward: Tsai
President Tsai Ing-wen

President Tsai Ing-wen said she hopes the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will unite Taiwan’s public and carry the nation forward.

Tsai was speaking on the release of five documentary films that commemorate the party’s upcoming 30th anniversary. She said the DPP should continue to hold the responsibility to push the nation forward.

"The DPP has, over a span of 30 years, proven that it is trustworthy [to Taiwan’s public]. Now that the party is back in power and approaching its 30th anniversary, it should march with the Taiwanese people and carry the nation forward with maturity," said Tsai.

Tsai said she hopes to pay tribute to her predecessors in the party through the documentaries. She said she also hopes the current members of DPP can carry the dreams and work ethic of those who came before them.

The DPP was illegal in its early days, when Taiwan was a one-party state under the Kuomintang. After Taiwan attained full representative democracy, the country saw its first democratic transition of power when Chen Shui-bian of the DPP was elected president in 2000.
