Bill to abolish Special Investigation Division passes first reading

A bill that would abolish the Special Investigation Division has passed its first reading in a Legislature committee meeting.

The Special Investigation Division was established in 2007 to examine allegations of corruption among high-ranking officials. However, the division has faced accusations of partisan bias, abuse of power, and poor performance, leading some lawmakers to call for its abolition.

The bill on the table would make the Special Investigation Division unnecessary by allowing prosecutors to call on government experts to help in investigations. If the bill becomes law, the division will cease to exist on January 1.
