National Taiwan University (NTU) has dropped to 195th in the annual Times Higher Education global rankings for universities. The latest Times rankings were published on Wednesday.
Twenty-six schools in Taiwan featured in the expanded list of 980 assessed universities. NTU was the only one in the top 200. The National University of Singapore was the top-ranked school in Asia, at 24th.
The rankings were led by Oxford University, followed by the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
An editor for the rankings told Taiwan’s Central News Agency that NTU is struggling with an unsatisfactory environment for both teaching and research. The agency reported that a decreasing population of young people has made it difficult for Taiwan to remain competitive in higher education.
Other Taiwanese schools that made it into the top 500 on the list were National Tsing Hua University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
