Power industry marketization won’t raise prices: Premier
Premier Lin Chuan

The marketization of the power industry will not lead to higher electricity prices. That’s the word from Premier Lin Chuan on Friday.

The Cabinet wants the Legislature to pass the amendment to the Electricity Act, which aims to marketize the electricity industry. Employees of the state-owned Taiwan Power Company as well as some of the public have claimed the amendment may mean higher rates for electricity.

Lin said at the Legislature that he does not believe this will be the case.

“We do not believe that the marketization of the power industry will mean higher electricity prices. We have discussed public concerns, and about the issues we need to avoid during the amendment. We have also talked how we can redesign the system to alleviate the public’s worries. We are still waiting for input from the electricity industry, and are trying to find the solutions to all the issues at hand," said Lin.

Economics minister Lee Chih-kung also said that the ministry welcomes the public to inspect their version of the amendment once it is completed.
