This year’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meeting on food security will convene in Piura, Peru next week. The minister of the Council of Agriculture, Tsao Chi-hung, departed Taiwan on Friday to attend.

The Council said Tsao will explain to other APEC members the measures Taiwan has undertaken to ensure food security. Tsao will also discuss strategies for food safety cooperation with the other delegates. The minister will also seek to exchange views with other ministers on the sidelines of the event, the Council said.

This is the fourth APEC ministerial meeting on food security after meetings in Japan in 2010, Russia in 2012 and China in 2014. The delegates will discuss issues related to climate change, world population and urbanization, investment in agriculture and the challenges these pose to food production.

The theme of this year’s meeting has been set as “strengthening regional food security” with a focus on easing market access and investment, responding to climate change, and urban and rural development.
