Another Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker has been refused entry into Hong Kong. The lawmaker -- Karen Yu -- was invited to speak at the Social Enterprise World Forum in Hong Kong. She is the third ruling party legislator denied entry into the territory this year.
Taiwan’s top China policymaker -- Mainland Affairs Council Minister Katherine Chang – spoke out about the news on Monday. She said that it is unreasonable for the Hong Kong government to refuse entry to Taiwanese lawmakers as a result of pressure from the authorities in Bejiing.
“We think that this is very unreasonable. Anyone should be free to travel to Hong Kong. Hong Kong should not be subject to pressure from Mainland China. It is highly regrettable that [the Hong Kong government] is restricting our lawmakers from traveling to Hong Kong. We will continue to work to resolve the matter," said Chang.
Meanwhile, Chang again expressed her strong dissatisfaction with China for blocking Taiwan’s attendance at the International Civil Aviation Organization forum, which opens in Montreal, Canada, on Tuesday.
