President says plan needed to prevent power outages
President Tsai Ing-wen

Typhoon Megi moved away from Taiwan on Wednesday, leaving four dead and 527 injured in its wake. It also led to blackouts which affected more than three million homes on Tuesday.

President Tsai Ing-wen said Wednesday that the government must figure out how to better deal with power outages during typhoons.

"Taiwan faces many natural disasters. If blackouts become a regular challenge, we should have a comprehensive plan to prevent these power outages during disasters," Tsai said.

Tsai made the remarks during a visit to the Taoyuan International Airport, where flights had resumed. Nearly 300 flights had been cancelled or delayed due to Typhoon Megi.

Also on Wednesday, Premier Lin Chuan said that power should be restored to all but remote areas by Thursday evening. He also thanked disaster prevention agencies for their hard work.

Over 14,000 people around Taiwan have been evacuated and over 4,000 are in shelters. Lin also cautioned evacuees not to rush home and to be careful of landslides.
