US Senator Marco Rubio has proposed the Taiwan Travel Act, a bill that aims to promote exchanges between US and Taiwanese officials. The bill is similar to legislation already proposed in the House of Representatives.
In a press release Wednesday, Rubio said the act will remove some of the self-imposed limitations when it comes to exchanges between senior US and Taiwanese officials. He said the act will also benefit workers in his constituency, the State of Florida, since Taiwan is the state’s sixth biggest export market in Asia.
Rubio also said in the press release that Taiwan is an important partner of the United States and the two nations share an interest in maintaining regional peace and development. He said it is especially important for the US to deepen its ties with Taiwan and promote exchanges at a time when China is trying to isolate Taiwan from the international community.
