Are you sure you want to let us grow apart? Taiwan asks China
MAC deputy minister and spokesperson Chiu Chui-cheng

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) is calling for China to think carefully about resuming communication with Taiwan. Otherwise, cross-strait relations will gradually grow apart. That’s the word from MAC deputy minister and spokesperson Chiu Chui-cheng on Friday.

Chiu said that Beijing’s obstinance since President Tsai Ing-wen took office has raised difficulties, pressure and obstacles for interaction between the two sides. He said Taiwan however will continue to abide by the constitution of the Republic of China, the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area and the democratic system in dealing with cross-strait problems. The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.

“Currently both sides need to use wisdom and patience to consider possible directions for the development of cross-strait relations. Mainland China should think carefully. If it continues to use opposition or confrontation, neither will resolve anything. It would only cause cross-strait relations to slowly drift further apart," said Chiu.

Chiu said that the MAC has always used “Mainland China” to address China since President Tsai took office in May. He said that’s because the MAC follows the constitution of the Republic of China and the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area.

Chiu called for both sides to lay down their historical burden and work towards positive dialogue for the good of the people on both sides.
