President Ma Ying-jeou is recovering after having cataract surgery on Saturday night.
A spokesperson for National Taiwan University hospital, Tan Ching-ting, said Sunday that the surgery was a success and that the president is recovering well.
The president’s surgery involved replacing a clouded lens in his right eye with an artificial lens. He had gone in for a routine checkup earlier on Saturday, and then returned later in the evening for the procedure, having assessed his schedule in order to ensure it would not interfere with his work.
