President Ma Ying-jeou on Monday urged cadets at the ROC Military Academy to continue upholding its decades-old traditions. The “ROC” refers to the Republic of China, which is Taiwan’s official name.
The president was speaking at the military academy’s graduation ceremony for the class of 2014.
This year also marks the academy’s 90th anniversary, which was founded in Huangpu, Guangdong province, in 1924. It is also known as Whampoa Military Academy.
In his commencement speech, Ma urged the cadets to uphold the traditions of loyalty and dedication to safeguarding the country.
“As the backbone of the armed forces, you are shouldering the major responsibilities of continuing the [glorious past] and passing down the traditions," said Ma. "We urge all cadets to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors; [in particular], their determination to make sacrifices for [their country] and lead the military in striving for excellence.”
Ma said the military’s upgraded defense capabilities are essential for ensuring cross-strait peace.
