Jobless rate in May hits record low following global financial crisis

Taiwan’s jobless rate continued to drop in May to 3.85%, a record low since the 2008 global financial crisis.

The government statistics office released a jobs report on Monday which shows the lowest unemployment figures since June, 2008. It was 0.06 percentage points lower than April and down 0.21 percentage points from the same period last year.

The wholesale industry added 5,000 jobs in May, while the retail industry added about 4,000 jobs.

Meanwhile a new salary report showed on Monday that regular monthly earnings in April were about NT$38,000 Taiwan dollars (US$1,266). The figure was up 0.29% from the previous month and with an annual increase of 1.55%. The average monthly earnings, however, were more than NT$42,000 Taiwan dollars (US$1,400). That was down 0.82% from the previous month, but represented an annual increase of 1.60%.
