Taiwan and the Solomon Islands have signed an agreement to work together on immigration affairs and to fight human trafficking. That’s the word from Interior Minister Chen Wei-zen on Wednesday.
Chen said the Solomon Islands, a diplomatic ally of Taiwan, is the first country in Oceania to sign such an agreement with Taiwan. He said he hopes that can lead to similar agreements with other countries in the region.
Chen said that when it comes to fighting human trafficking, the United States has rated Taiwan as a Tier 1 country, which is the best ranking. South Korea is the only other Asian country with that ranking. Chen said that human trafficking is a pressing issue in the world, and that many countries are already joining forces to combat it.
The interior minister said that since 2011, Taiwan has signed similar agreements and memorandums with other countries, including Mongolia, Honduras, Indonesia, Vietnam, Paraguay and the United States.
