EU welcomes Chinese official’s visit to Taiwan

The European Union says it welcomes the current visit to Taiwan by China’s top Taiwan policy maker Zhang Zhijun.

Zhang is the director of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office; he is in Taiwan on a four-day trip. That makes him the first ministerial-level Chinese official to visit Taiwan since the two sides split 65 years ago at the end of the Chinese civil war.

The EU released a statement on Thursday saying it encourages “both sides to continue to expand bilateral cooperation and links, thus contributing to regional peace and stability.” The statement also said Zhang’s trip has signaled the "dynamism of the process of rapprochement, established in 2008.”

The statement came from the office of Catherine Ashton, the EU’s top official in charge of foreign policy.
