Imports from New Zealand to Taiwan grew by 37.3% in the first five months of this year. Taiwan’s government statistics office said the increase can be attributed to the signing of an economic cooperation agreement between the two countries last December.

Taiwan’s main imports from New Zealand are dairy and agricultural products. For the first five months, the top imports have been milk and cream, followed by frozen beef products.

In the fruit category, there have been big increases in the imports of New Zealand apples, kiwi fruit and cherries. The import of methanol increased 4.5 times to meet heightened demand by local chemical ingredients manufacturers.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s total exports to New Zealand dropped 9.2% from a year ago for the last five months. However, exports of Taiwanese brand bicycles to New Zealand grew 74.6% from a year earlier.
