A tropical depression near Guam has developed into a tropical storm and may begin to affect Taiwan on Monday.
The Central Weather Bureau said Friday that Tropical Storm Neoguri, which is Korean for “raccoon”, is the eighth storm in the region this year. It was centered some 2,600 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, early on Friday. It was moving northwest at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour.
The bureau said the storm is forecast to swerve north towards Japan. It also said that starting on Monday, the outer bands of the storm are likely to bring rain to Taiwan, especially the northern and eastern areas.
The bureau said people planning to travel to Japan after Tuesday should check for possible cancellations.
