On this day in 1885, French chemist Louis Pasteur successfully treated a patient with his anti-rabies vaccine. He also founded modern microbiology, invented the process of pasteurization, and developed vaccines for anthrax and chicken cholera.

On this day in 1935, the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader in exile, was born. He would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

On this day in 1971, American jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong died of a heart attack at the age of 71. A virtuoso musician and popular, gravelly-voiced singer, he greatly influenced the development of jazz.

And on this day in 1975, tennis player Arthur Ashe defeated Jimmy Connors to become the first black men’s singles champion at Wimbledon. To this day, he is the only black man to ever win the singles event at Wimbledon, the US Open or the Australian Open.
