San-Francisco based transportation networking company, Uber, is looking to expand further in the Taiwan market despite protests from local taxi drivers. Uber is a mobile app that provides carpooling services by connecting passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire.
Taxi drivers protested in front of the transportation ministry on Monday. They say that the operations of Uber do not comply with Taipei law. Currently, Uber has a starting fare of NT$50 (US$1.67) which is lower than NT70 (US$2.34) for local taxis.
Nevertheless, the service has been a hit after entering Taiwan’s market in August last year. So far it has already set up branch offices in Taichung and Kaohsiung.
According to US-based Tech Times, Uber is looking not just to make headway in Taiwan, but also in China and other countries around the world.
