Foreign ministry issues travel alert for West Bank and Gaza

Taiwan’s foreign ministry has issued a travel alert for the West Bank and the Gaza Strip amid rising tensions in the region.

The foreign ministry issued the alert Thursday night. Earlier this week, Palestinian militant group Hamas fired rockets at southern Israel, which retaliated with military action. So far at least 60 people have been killed.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appealed for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine. He also called on the international community to do all it can to stop escalating violence in Gaza.

The foreign ministry called on the public to refrain from visiting the conflict areas unless necessary. It also said Taiwanese citizens should contact Taiwan’s representative office in Israel in case of emergency.
