President Ma Ying-jeou is lauding immigrants' contribution to Taiwan.
Ma made the comments on Saturday at an event in Taipei honoring immigrant families. He also said that Taiwan has always been an immigrant society, saying that anyone who is willing to work to make Taiwan a better place is Taiwanese.
Also on Saturday, in a national affairs conference on economics and trade in the eastern county of Hualien, President of National Dong Hwa University Wu Maw-kuen said the children of immigrants can play an important role in Taiwan’s economic integration with Southeast Asia. Wu said Taiwan has a large number of immigrants from Vietnam and Indonesia. He also said their children should be encouraged to learn Southeast Asian languages. Wu said equipped with language skills, the children of immigrants will help Taiwan tap into the Southeast Asian market.
