The mercury climbed to a record high this year in Taipei on Sunday, maxing out at 37.8 Celsius at 12:15pm. That marks the first time this year that it’s topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Taipei.
The Central Weather Bureau said the high temperature was due to a strong high pressure system over the Pacific. Meteorologists said another reason for the heat was the warm southwesterly winds affecting Taiwan.
Temperatures also reached about 36.6 degrees in the neighboring cities of New Taipei and Keelung.
