The International Scientific Committee for Tuna and Tuna-like Species in the North Pacific Ocean (ISC) is scheduled to hold its 14th meeting in Taipei on Wednesday.
Founded in 1995, ISC is aimed at strengthening cooperation among seven member countries, including Taiwan.
Fisheries experts and scientists from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) will also be participating in the event. It is expected that participants in the annual event will put forward a report for WCPFC when mapping out further guidelines for tuna fishing
The WCPFC has introduced several guidelines for tuna fishing since 2009. Last year, the commission stipulated that catches of young tuna under 30 kilograms and aged under three must be reduced by 15%.
Taiwan has abided by the guidelines set up by the WCPFC. However, it was reported that fleets carrying the flags of Japan, South Korea and Mexico are still involved in young tuna fishing.
