Taiwan's divorce rate has been dropping steadily in the past seven years, according to the latest statistics released by the interior ministry on Saturday.
Government statistics show that last year, 53,599 couples divorced. That’s 9.9 per 1,000 couples, and the figure is 4% lower than in 2012. Of the marriages that ended in divorce, 30.6% did not last for more than 5 years.
In addition, multinational marriages are three times more likely to end in divorce in Taiwan. Compared with the figures in 2004, the divorce rate of marriages where one spouse is from Southeast Asia grew higher to 30.4 per 1,000 couples.
The interior ministry said over the past seven years, the divorce rate in Taiwan has fallen steadily. Between 2002 and 2006, an average of 63,230 marriages ended in divorce. But between 2007 and 2013, the figure fell to 56,612.
