Taiwan's June export orders could rise over 5%: Economics ministry

Taiwan's export orders for June are expected to continue to rise, growing more than 5% from a year earlier.

The economics ministry made the comments on Saturday. It said thanks to the ongoing uptrend in the global export market, June could be the fifth consecutive month in which Taiwan has seen year-on-year growth in export orders.

In May, Taiwan's export orders rose 4.7% from a year earlier to total US$38.02 billion, largely in reflection of solid demand for mobile devices worldwide.

The ministry said as strong demand for handheld devices continues, Taiwan's high-tech product exporters are expected to report growing order data in June.

However, the ministry said Taiwanese flat screen suppliers still face stiff competition from China and South Korea. It also said Taiwanese petrochemical and base metal exporters should remain alert over a supply glut in the Chinese market.

The ministry is scheduled to release its June export order data on Monday.
