On this day in 1938, the United States Department of Justice filed suit against the motion picture industry, saying that the studio system violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. The case would eventually result in a break-up of the industry in 1948.

On this day in 1969, Apollo 11's crew successfully made the first landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon later that day.

On this day in 1989, Burma's ruling junta put opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest.

And on this day in 1999, the Chinese Communist Party began a persecution campaign against Falun Gong, arresting thousands nationwide.
