President to nominate new candidates for Control Yuan

President Ma Ying-jeou will select new candidates for appointment to the Control Yuan after the legislature rejected 11 of the original 27 nominees on Tuesday.

The Control Yuan is one of the five branches of government in Taiwan. It is also the top government watchdog.

The Presidential Office said that President Ma respects the legislature’s decision and that the president will nominate new candidates before the next session of the legislature. The president also called on the ruling and opposition parties to work together to keep the government functioning.

According to amendments to the Constitution, members of the Control Yuan serve terms of six years and the president is empowered to appoint all 29 members, subject to the approval of the Legislature.

 

The new members of the Control Yuan will begin their six-year terms Aug. 1.
