The new president of the Control Yuan, Chang Po-ya, took office Friday. She is the first female president of the government body, which acts as a government accountability agency.
At the investiture ceremony, Vice President Wu Den-yih said that with her expertise and qualifications, Chang can live up to the expectations of the Taiwanese people.
Outgoing Control Yuan President Wang Chien-shien was also present at the ceremony. He said the Control Yuan has received much public criticism and some say it should be reformed or even abolished. But he said he expects that Chang will be successful in her new role.
Chang said that as President of the Control Yuan, she will respect public opinion. She said the Control Yuan’s oversight of the government is both important and necessary.
She also said the structure of the Control Yuan prevents it from directly censuring or impeaching public officials. But as President of the Control Yuan, she will communicate with the judiciary to remedy this situation.
