The Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office says whoever is found responsible for the blasts that shook the city earlier this week could be guilty of offenses against public safety.

As of Sunday morning, 28 people were confirmed dead and almost 300 injured after a suspected propylene leak led to the worst accident of its kind that Taiwan has ever seen.

According to the prosecutors office on Saturday, the investigation team will go through all recorded electronic data three days prior to the incident and any other records related to construction.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu has asked all businesses that have underground pipelines in the metropolitan area to provide comprehensive maps and data to the city government for future safety management.

Meanwhile, a lawyer from the Taipei-based Win Wan Attorneys-at-Law, Liao Te-chiao, said if the explosions were found to be caused by a propylene leak, the party found to be responsible could face criminal charges of negligent homicide in performing occupational duties or activities, which carries a possible jail sentence of up to five years.
