Education minister takes office
Education Minister Wu Se-hwa

The new Education Minister, Wu Se-hwa, has taken office, replacing Chiang Wei-ling, who resigned amid an academic scandal.

In a ceremony on Wednesday, Wu said he would seek to invest limited resources where they are needed most. He also pledged to be more inclusive when trying to find solutions to problems in Taiwan’s education system.

“Our society is a democratic society, and we need to pay attention to diverse values and voices and try to understand them," said Wu. "During my term of office, the Ministry of Education and I are willing to spend more time to listen to the voices of the heads of school, parents, students, and young people. I also hope that after everyone has fully expressed their opinion, we’ll be able to find the best, most appropriate solution.”

Meanwhile, in response to criticism that he supports higher university tuition fees when wages have become stagnant, Wu said investment in education is for the good of society. But he said before tuition fees are raised, there needs to be a consensus among students, parents, and universities.
